Qaryat

Surrounded by the salt dunes of the Moghra'yi, nestled between an oasis and the ancient wreck of a gargantuan metal beast lies Qaryat. The inhabitants of the middling desert town long ago gave up any notion of fortification; the little fresh water that pooled in the oasis was simply too valuable to ignore by any rationale inhabitant of the desert. A town concerned with fortifying such a valuable resource would be so consumed by siege and embargo that the effort would have been a waste. Thus, Qaryat has become a freehold to all the denizens of the salt desert, under the shared agreement that anyone of any creed may quench their thirst so long as they curry peaceable intentions. This policy inevitably draws in a crowd of less than desirable qudfolk to the town. Isacchari mercenaries and other groups ordinarily barred from entry to most settlements flock to Qaryat as a haven from the strict laws, tenets, and warrants of the remnants of civil society in qud.
GOVERNMENT
Tuskar Mig, a fledgling esper with mild precognitive and clairvoyant abilities, has taken up management of the town. While not formally the leader, he acts as administrator for Qaryat, managing migrant labour for various public works and infrastructure. Tuskar collects donations on excess water drawn by caravans for long voyages, and uses the funds to manage the needs of the village and eke out a modest living with leftover funds. Tuskar is mild mannered, and always very collected, using his mutations to plan village projects and stave off emergencies before they occur.
Warden Brawne and Security
Warden Brawne is the posted agent of the Fellowship of Wardens in Qaryat. The post is widely considered to be the worst assignment of all of the settlements under the protection of the fellowship, due to the unmanageable nature of its inhabitants. Brawne was posted in the village after multiple complaints from other settlements regarding her aggressive demeanour, and judicious use of her stinger. Victims have purported a single jab causes extreme disorientation and confusion, followed by excessive vomiting. Brawne has had her work cut out for her in Qaryat, but by the accounts of others, she appears to be right at home amidst the ruthless and cutthroat denizens of the salt desert.
The streets of Qaryat
While there are no dedicated merchants in the village, dromad caravans from the west across the Moghra’yi often take refuge amongst the oasis. On a rare occasion, exotic goods from unscrupulous sellers often make their appearance in Qaryat.
The streets of Qaryat are little more than tarred paths that wind like dawngliders through the sands, yielding to cobble paths as they approach the entrances of yurts and sandstone structures that dot the landscape. A first glance towards the oasis side of town gives the appearance of opulence and abundance, although the illusion quickly fades as one approaches the shanties that dwell within the wreckage of the great metal carcass. Occasionally a child of great naivety will boldly approach the twisted metal carnage that forms the bulk of the ruin, only to turn and flee once the klaxon of alarms rings out from deep within the confines of that enigmatic dead giant.
