LOCATION
Mishkam Kitanum, a village towards the brine bogs where the salt marshes give way to the ochre climbs of the desert canyons. Here amongst the tepid, brackish pools of water that form from the run off of the desert canyons, a community of watervine farmers clings onto the edge of existence. It is told that once a caravan of dromad and human ilk broke down on its route towards a distant city in the Moghra'yi and--rather than face the arduous route home without transport--decided instead to form an encampment. Over time, this encampment grew into a village that in turn attracted disparate farmers from the surrounding area--driven off their lands by an incursion of snapjaw brigands.
Part of Mishkam Kitanum's appeal lies in its location: too far from the pilgrim roads of the Six Day Stilt to attract the attention of raiders, whilst still within range of the amicable Kyakukya. These days most snapjaw refrain from treading too near to the surrounding starapple groves and watervine farms. The worst the locals have to contend with is rampant boar treading their crops and the occasional, lost girshling.
GOVERNMENT
The town is ruled by Elder Melech and his Council of Advisers. A representative from each industry within the settlement is elected onto the council every year, and this person will put forth the qualms of their guild.
Warden Urgal and Security
Warden Urgal is a wiry, talkative man, and a new recruit into the fellowship. Urgal oversees the defense the town with the help of a militia drawn up from the more capable farm hands. Despite his easy going nature and helpful demeanour, Urgal is calculating and shrewd; no one takes the safety of the settlement more seriously than he, and this is something the young warden has proved on more than one occasion.
Research and Technomancy
Koban Turuq is a diminutive, dark-skinned man clad in plain cream robes, a turban and an Issachari sun veil that denotes his supposed origins. The avid tinkerer is said to have fled the Moghra'yi after accidentally disintegrating one of the favoured soldiers of his clan. His hut to the south of the town is adorned with an array of trinkets and pieces of ancient technology in various states of deconstruction. The mechanic-cum-scientist is purported to be able to take apart 40% of everything he's given and put it back together 20% of the time! Nevertheless, Koban's breakthroughs have lead variously to the uptake of improved water-ploughs amongst the vine farmers, the discovery of a new type of paper, and the creation of a talking frog that rides atop a sphere of anti-weight and discovers honey weeps from up to 400 paces.
Nursen Looopabaa
Nursen is said to have descended from the very same dromad who accidentally set the caravan on fire which in turn led to the establishment of Mishkam Kitanum. The owner of the market plaza in the centre of town, this sly and cunning merchant can get you exactly what you need...for a price.
The Streets of Mishkam Kitanum
As one enters the settlement from the western palisade gate, they will likely marvel at the surprising advancement of this podunk town. Gravel-lined streets meander through one, two and even three storey dwellings that seem to yawn away from the roads the higher they rise. The bustle of gentle commerce leads you toward the town centre, where an expansive daily market forms the centre piece of the settlement. Banners advertising starapple pies and water-resistant boots nestle amongst the stalls; their coloured tarpaulin roofs fluttering in a breeze that carries with it the intoxifying scents of foreign perfumes, spit roasted goat flank and the ever-pervading beachy brine smell of the surrounding marshes. Dromad children scuttle down narrow alleys, chasing sun-cats and chimps while their parents watch on, chewing the tips of smoke-sticks and catching up on the day-to-day of what they affectionately call, "Mishkit".
